ACUTE MALARIA: DIAGNOSIS ISSUES
F.J. Louis
SUMMARY
In Cameroon, there are no shortages of trained technicians for the parasitological diagnosis of malaria and the equation "fever + parasites = malaria" retains its significance in current medical practice. Nevertheless, C. Hengry and D. Gozal drew attention in 1990 to only slightly positive thick films, particularly in expatriates taking chemoprophylaxis. Four reports in under three months to the Anti-endemic Central African Co-ordination Organisation (OCEAC) bring to mind the relative sensitivity of the parasitological diagnosis and again draw attention to the false confidence that can be induced by a negative thick film during initial investigations in a febrile patient or in a patient suffering from headaches.
