Malaria N° 9 - Subject N° 16

THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW ANTI-MALARIALS
J. Horton

SUMMARY
Today there is an increased awareness, both in Western Government circles and also within the Pharmaceutical industry, of malaria as a global problem, and this, in the last five years, has lead to the progression of a number of new developments in the field. Those of the 1980's, mefloquine, halofantrine and the artemesinin derivatives have spearheaded this change, and shown to some extent that such development is justified and economic. However some doubt remains in the minds of industry, and thus progress seems to be slow. The initiation of recent initiatives on malaria, much targeting the problem in Africa, is welcome, and is raising the political pressure and general awareness of malaria. Hopefully this will eventually bear fruit.
