THE DISPOSITION OF CHLOROQUINE IN VOLUNTEERS HETEROZYGOUS FOR THE SICKLING GENE ARE SIMILAR TO NORMALS
O.G. Ademowo, O. Walker & Sodeinde

SUMMARY
We have compared the pharmacokinetics of chloroquine in adult persons who are heterozygous for the sickling gene (AS) and adults homozygous for normal haemoglobin gene (AA) normals. It was shown that the pharmacokinetics were largely similar between the two groups.
The peack concentration (Cmax) of chloroquine was significantly higher in AA than in AS subjects. This may be due to the slightly faster urinary elimination in the AS relative to the AA subjects. However, the urinary recovery of chloroquine and its major metabolic desethyl-chloroquine were similar in both groups.

KEY WORDS: Chloroquine, Desethyl-chloroquine, Pharmacokinetics, Sickle-cell gene.
